Chapter 4-07: And Now the Fun Begins

The boys eventually showed up to the dance. There was no fight between them, but they gave us a bit of shit for letting the limo go on without them. Jevon and I danced quite a bit and he was actually nice to me. Kesha and Hassan were nearly making out on the dance floor. That was kind of unexpected, timid as she was. As for Vanya — she got a few dances in, but no guy really stole her heart, so she said.

“So how was it, girls?”

I don’t know how long Mom had been waiting up for us, but she looked kinda tired or spaced out or something. I went right to the machine for a latte, ’cause I certainly was not gonna let myself get tired tonight. It was Friday and my very first official dance and I didn’t want to the night to end yet!

Kesha beamed and told her, “It was great! Hassan was really sweet the whole night.”

“That’s good, honey. Why didn’t he come back with you?”

“Oh, I didn’t know we were allowed to bring our dates back.”

Mom sounded almost sad when she sighed. “W-well I guess you could have. Though I need to go to bed and can’t be here to monitor, so I guess it’s just as well. But at least you had fun at the dance.” She rambled on, “I didn’t get to go to a dance with your dad… I know it’s not your official prom or anything but apparently at his they had a wild party after—y-you girls aren’t going at the bar or anything, right..?”

“We’re not even legal age, Mom.” Kesh said.

“Ohhh, I know, you’re such sweet girls… and so young. What am I even thinking?” She tittered and half-shrugged. I was slightly amused by her, actually, wondering if I had been right about her drinking or being at the bubble machine.

“It’s okay, Mom. You need to go to sleep, we’ll be fine.” I said, and she got up and gave a full stretch and yawn. We each gave her a good night hug and she ambled upstairs.

“Well that was kind of weird.” Kesha said after we sat down with our beverages.

I laughed. “Yeah.”

“So what do we do now?”

“I dunno.”

“Maybe we shoulda brought the boys back.”

“No.” I said firmly. “Ya know… I don’t know if I’m really feeling it with Jevon. He was nice at the dance, but did you see how he was getting on with Hassan in the snow and all? I mean, what a child!”

“Yeah, that was jerkish.” Kesh replied.

“He’s not even as cute as he was when he was a kid.” I continued. “Do you think he’s as cute?”

“Not really, but I didn’t wanna say anything.”

“Well… why didn’t you say anything?! Now I feel like we have to be a couple and everything, because we went to the dance and everyone will think we’re all official and I’ll have to be his girlfriend.”

“You don’t have to be.” Kesha said matter-of-factly.

“But I got myself into this now…”

I looked around then, because someone was missing from this important conversation. “Hey, where’s Vanya?”

“She said something about having a headache on the way home. I think she’s gone to bed.”

Disappointed, I replied. “Oh. She’s no fun. I guess it’s just you and me then, to spice up this party.” I smiled in spite of the slightly scared look on my sister’s face. “And I know just how we’re gonna do that.”

“You sure you know what you’re doing?” Kesha inquired when we were seated at the backyard bar.

“Of course!”

“Y-y-you sure this is a good idea?” She continued.

“Don’t worry. Mom is sound to the world by now if she took her sleeping pills. Everyone is asleep. Do you wanna try one or what? Or are you gonna be a scaredy cat?”

She just stared at me and gulped loudly. I gave the metal flask with the orange juice and pineapple mix a good shake to make it frothy, then grabbed the large bottle of vodka. I wasn’t sure how much to add, but I assumed it would have to be a fair bit, so it wouldn’t be watered down by the mix.

“H-how do you know how to do that?” Kesha asked.

“Instinct.” I winked.

Her eyes widened and I assured her, “I’ve watched people do it, okay?”

I poured the completed mixture into two large glasses and handed one to my sister. “Ready? We’ll drink it together on three.”

“One… two… three!”

The rest of the night got a little blurry after that.

I remember being inside and having a random argument with Vanya and I don’t who started it.

The snow was almost up to my knees but I was outside at the bar again. Who else was gonna drink all these fancy drinks I made?

What did I say to Vanya?

Mmmm… this feels buzzy. And the snow feels nice and I’m not even cold.

Maybe I should apologize to Vannie.

Luckily Vanya was still inside ’cause she was having a late night snack. Actually, I wasn’t even sure how late it was. A middle of the night snack…? Or was it maybe midnight-ish?

“Hey, I’m sorry for what I said.” I told her.

“Whatev.” She shrugged, still looking slightly peeved.

“Hey, do you wanna go have a snowball fight?” It was a random, crazy thought, I know, but I figured maybe we could have a bit of fun.

“Are you crazy, girl? It’s snowing and dark and I’m still in my night dress!” She did seem intrigued at the idea, despite her reaction.

“Yeah, that’s your challenge.” I laughed. “And you can get me back by throwing snow at me.”

“You’re on, bitch!”

“Sis…? Are you okay?”

“I’m okay….”
